Job description

The University of Glasgow s School of Biodiversity, One Health & Veterinary Medicine is seeking to appoint a Lecturer in Small Animal Practice Rotation. You will be based in our award-winning Small Animal Hospital on the beautiful Garscube estate. This busy multidisciplinary hospital is staffed by a team of specialists in surgery, internal medicine, neurology, oncology, diagnostic imaging, anaesthesia, and ophthalmology. State of the art facilities available on-site include 1.5T MRI, CT, linear accelerator, digital radiography, and four fully equipped surgical theatres. Our One Hospital team ethos ensures exceptional clinical care can be delivered to our patients, and supports the continual professional development of our vets, nurses and support staff.

The School of Biodiversity One Health and Veterinary Medicine has an excellent international reputation in teaching, clinical services and research and is accredited by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS), the European Association of Establishments of Veterinary Education (EAEVE) and the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Our on-site clinical facilities are one of the most sophisticated in Europe allowing companion animals from across the United Kingdom to benefit for the most advanced care available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week throughout the year from some of the best specialist vets in the world.

Job Purpose

To supervise Professional Phase veterinary undergraduate students (BVMS 5) participating in first opinion small animal clinical service, primarily at partner sites, with an emphasis on supervising simple, elective surgeries and routine dentistry. Contribute to supporting the acquisition of clinical and professional skills by BVMS students and to support the development of written reflective skills in the development of BVMS individual student portfolios.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Teaching:

To take primary responsibility for all aspects of the planning, organisation and delivery of undergraduate clinical supervision activities in small animal first opinion practice, as directed by the Head of School in consultation with the course leaders.
To participate in the supervision of practical work advising on skills, methods and techniques in both the small animal clinical environment (with an emphasis on surgery) and other undergraduate teaching.
To take responsibility for the delivery of a range of assessment activities and engage with in the examination process as appropriate and provide effective, timely and appropriate feedback to students to support learning.
To contribute to the ongoing development and design of the curriculum, in a manner that supports a research led and scholarly approach to student learning.
To undertake administrative duties as requested by the programme leaders and Head of Division and to lead specific initiatives to enhance the learning experience and ensure the requirements of regulatory bodies are met.
Primary responsibility for the quality assurance and enhancement activities in relation to the primary role. Participate in curriculum review and programme re-accreditation with the University and professional bodies to ensure high quality education provision is maintained.
Where assigned, to prepare relevant materials and plan teaching sessions for the delivery of specialised lectures on courses.
To collaborate with colleagues on programme development through feedback on student attainment and the application of appropriate assessment mechanisms to meet defined learning objectives.

Clinical:

Manage the provision of high-quality care to both in and outpatients at small animal first opinion clinics through the supervision of Professional Phase veterinary undergraduate students.
Contribute to the activities of the University Pet Practice, including clinical service provision, teaching, and other professional duties, as appropriate to the role.

Administration/Other

To undertake administrative duties as requested by the Professional phase course leader, Head of School or delegate.
To engage in such scholarship as is necessary to keep up-to-date with developments in their discipline and in the practice of teaching in order to provide a high quality research-informed teaching contribution.
This role will be expected to take on deputy responsibilities relating to the operation of the Pet Practice primary care practice.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Knowledge/Qualifications

Essential:

A1 Veterinary degree registered with the RCVS.

Desirable:

B1 Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
B2 Evidence of post graduate professional development.

Skills

Essential:

C1 Expertise in small animal first opinion practice, corresponding to training and qualifications, and ability to provide expert advice to students, clinicians, support staff and external organisations.
C2 Excellent communications skills both orally and written.
C3 Excellent interpersonal skills and presentation skills.
C4 Time, project and people management skills.
C5 Ability to work with little supervision.
C6 Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
C7 Self-motivated, able to plan for contingencies and think strategically.
C8 Ability to accept collegiate responsibilities and act accordingly.
C9 Proven experience of leadership in a small animal clinical setting.

Desirable:

D1 Performance of scholarship in a veterinary practice environment.
D2 Understanding and experience of databases and other IT applications/packages.

Experience

Essential:

E1 Minimum 3 years surgical experience within clinical small animal practice.

Desirable:

F1 Experience in the delivery of teaching and practical training at undergraduate veterinary student level.
F2 Evidence of post graduate expertise in surgery e.g., special interest certification.

Salary will be Grade 8, 50,253 - 58,225 per annum.

This post is full time (35 Hours Per Week) and open ended.
