Opportunity Overview

About the ESRF

The European Synchrotron, the ESRF, is an international research centre based in Grenoble, France.

Through its innovative engineering, pioneering scientific vision and a strong commitment from its 700 staff members, the ESRF is recognised as one of the top research facilities worldwide. Its particle accelerator produces intense X-ray beams that are used by thousands of scientists each year for experiments in diverse fields such as biology, medicine, environmental sciences, cultural heritage, materials science, and physics.

Supported by 19 countries, the ESRF is an equal opportunity employer and encourages diversity.

Job Description

The European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) is looking for a motivated scientist to join ID01, a world leading beamline dedicated to micro-/nano-beam diffraction imaging experiments. The beamline team has worked in collaboration with numerous experts from the user community on the development of new tools exploiting the ESRF unique beam coherence and brilliance. Various 2D and 3D imaging techniques such as scanning nanobeam diffraction microscopy, full field diffraction microscopy and Bragg Coherent Diffraction Imaging (BCDI) are uniquely integrated and available at ID01. They are applied to materials and nanostructures across a wide field of applications and technologies ranging from catalysis over batteries to the physics of growth and microelectronic devices. The setup offers a variety of specific sample environments for in-situ /operando experiments, at high and low temperatures or using electric driving of samples and devices exploiting time resolution down to 100 ps. Already unique in its capacities, the beamline is permanently evolving and further improving its capabilities steadily integrating available progress in enabling technologies like nanopositioning or X-ray optics. The beamline team is supported and completed by numerous visiting scientists and PhD students that collaborate on a basis of external grants and collaborations with research institutes across Europe.

As a scientist at ID01, you will:

Conduct cutting-edge research and exploit and drive ID01's unique technical possibilities, developing your own in-house research project in consultation with your supervisor.

Support external users (both academic and industrial) in conducting experiments on the beamline.

Drive technical developments, ensuring continuous upgrades and improvements of the beamline instrumentation.

Collaborate with international experts, working closely with a multidisciplinary team

Present and publish your research findings in conferences, workshops, and peer-reviewed journals.

Educational Qualifications

PhD in a STEM field and several years of postdoctoral experience in physics, chemistry, or another closely related field.

Technical Skills

Experience with X-ray (coherent) diffraction, X-ray optics, or related experimental techniques would be desirable.

A background in scientific programming would be an important asset

Strong background in experimental research, preferably in the development and application of scattering/diffraction techniques

Soft Skills

Ambition to develop and lead research projects, from proposal to publication, favouring and encouraging collaborative work.

Ability to prioritize and communicate efficiently in a fast paced environment of a large scale user facility.

Ability to collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams and coordinate activities with internal and external colleagues.

Hands-on approach with a dedication to experimental work.

Strong communication skills, with experience in presenting research findings at conferences and publishing in peer-reviewed journals.

Fluency in English (working language at ESRF).

Contract and Salary

5-year contract.

The salary will be calculated on the basis of relevant qualifications and professional experience.
