About the employer
Chalmers University of Technology
Our goal is to focus on competence, knowledge and collaboration in order to play an important, demonstrable role in social development.
About the role
Do you want to explore the generation of quantum states in levitated microparticles and contribute to the development of superconducting quantum technologies? As a Doctoral student in this project, you will perform cutting-edge experiments at the frontier of quantum technology.
About us
The Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience advances the frontiers in quantum technology, nanoscience, photonics and future electronic systems - for technical and societal development. Our cross-disciplinary approach gives interesting collaborations in academy, industry and society, and is a driving force for innovations, results and breakthroughs. We offer a vibrant, international research environment and direct access to world-class nanofabrication facilities.
At the Quantum Technology Laboratory, we explore how quantum physics can unlock radically new ways of processing information - far beyond the limits of classical systems. Our research spans quantum computing, sensing, transduction, quantum thermodynamics, and foundations, all aimed at harnessing the powerful behavior of light and matter at the quantum level. We offer a vibrant, international research environment and direct access to world-class nanofabrication facilities.
About the research project
The vision of the project is to explore the generation of quantum states in the center-of-mass motion of levitated microparticles. This research project builds upon the Wieczorek group's expertise in magnetically levitating superconducting microparticles on a chip. Magnetic levitation of superconducting microparticles is a platform that greatly decouples the center-of-mass motion of a levitated mechanical resonator from its environment. This platform will enable ultra-sensitive force and acceleration sensors, as well as quantum experiments with macroscopic objects of 10^13 atomic mass units.
The goal of the Doctoral student project is to develop and realize superconducting quantum circuit elements that can efficiently couple to the motion of the levitated particle. Within the project, you will simulate and fabricate your devices and use these for your experiments. You will receive training in all required techniques to ensure a smooth start to your project in our collaborative research environment. The research project is experimental in nature and supervised by Prof. Dr. Witlef Wieczorek. The Wieczorek group is part of the Quantum Technology Laboratory (QTL) at the Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience (MC2). The project will profit from synergies with the superconducting circuit technology developed within the Wallenberg Center for Quantum Technology.
Who we are looking for
The following requirements are mandatory:
- To qualify as a Doctoral student, you must have a Master's degree (masterexamen) of 120 credits or a Master s degree (magisterexamen) of 60 credits* in Physics, Applied Physics, Engineering Physics, Nanotechnology, or similar.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
- You are proactive and driven, with a strong motivation to pursue excellent experimental research in a collaborative environment.
*for students with an education earned outside of Sweden, a 4-year Bachelor s degree is accepted.
The following experience will strengthen your application:
- Experience in quantum optics, quantum technology, superconducting quantum circuit technology and/or microfabrication is considered a merit.
What you will do
- Take courses at an advanced level within the Graduate school of Microtechnology and Nanoscience.
- Develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing.
- The position generally also includes teaching on Chalmers' undergraduate level or performing other duties corresponding to 20 percent of working hours.
- You will design, simulate and fabricate superconducting quantum circuit devices and use them for your experiments.
Contract terms
- The Doctoral student positions are fully funded from start.
- The position is a fixed-term appointment of four years, with the possibility to teach up to 20%, which extends the position up to five years.
- A starting salary of 35,725 SEK per month (valid from May 1, 2026).
- Doctoral studies require physical presence throughout the entire study period. A valid residence permit must be presented by the study start date; otherwise the admission may be withdrawn.
