Job Description Summary

Organization Summary Statement:

University Honors is a two-year living-learning program, the largest in the Honors College at the University of Maryland, College Park. We seek a leader for the management of a dynamic office that serves hundreds of students and upwards of 40 faculty members per semester. The Business Manager provides strategic and comprehensive support of the program mission and operations across three main areas: Budget & Payroll, Personnel & Human Resources, and Operations & Facilities. The Business Manager reports to the Director of University Honors.

Examples of Work:

  • Budget & Payroll: This role is responsible for the end-to-end administration and continuous improvement of payroll, as well as the appointment, onboarding, and offboarding processes for faculty, staff, and student workers. That responsibility includes managing a bi weekly payroll for all employees, ensuring compliance with UMD policies and procedures and relevant federal and state laws, improving operational efficiency, and maintaining integrity in all business operations. The Business Manager acts as the primary architect of our budget platforms, from modeling to tracking, and the primary liaison with budget officers in the Honors College and UGST.

  • Personnel & Human Resources: The Business Manager supports staff, faculty, and student leaders from hire to offboarding by interpreting and applying relevant University policies, developing procedures and resources, and serving as the primary liaison to central HR and Benefits. The role requires facility with Workday and a commitment to learning and creatively navigating the various staff and faculty appointment workflows in the system.

  • Operations & Facilities: To ensure the effective and efficient flow of office processes, the Business Manager oversees the use, scheduling, and stock of all spaces in the UH Commons (first floor of Yahentamitsi Hall). As the primary supervisor of the health and functionality of our physical space, the Business Manager works with relevant campus partners to optimize the furniture, hardware, and software utilized in the unit.

Physical Demands:

There is an expectation of work performed primarily in the office with prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and at a computer. The qualified candidate is required to perform activities such as preparing spreadsheets, working in databases, viewing a computer terminal and reading extensively. Ability to traverse short/long distances on and off campus to attend meetings and events. Occasionally required to lift, carry or move office items.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Experience: Three (3) years of professional human resources, payroll, finance, accounting, procurement, or travel coordination experience.
  • Other: Additional work experience as defined above may be substituted on a year for year basis for up to four (4) years of the required education.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of human resources policies and procedures, and federal, state, and other applicable human resources related laws, rules, regulations, and ordinances.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Skill in the use of Microsoft Office products.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize assignments.
  • Ability to interpret and apply policies, procedures, regulations, and laws.

Additional Job Details

Preferences:

  • Graduate degree(s) from an accredited institution
  • Five or more years of full-time administrative experience in an academic setting
  • Experience in supervising students and/or staff
  • Knowledge of payroll policies and procedures, and federal, state, and other applicable payroll related laws, rules, regulations, and ordinances.
  • Knowledge of systems in use at USM institutions: Workday, Concur, and Adaptive Planning.
  • Skill in the use of Google Suite products.
  • Skill in the use of Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Ability to develop and administer new policies and procedures.
  • Commitment to inclusive practices in one s work.
  • Experience in training and supporting students and/or staff.
