Opportunity Overview

Biostatistician to the Clinical Memory Research group

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world s top universities. The University has around 46 000 students and 8 500 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malm . We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard equality, equal opportunities and diversity as a strength and an asset.

Description of the research group

The Clinical Memory Research group at the Department of Clinical Sciences Malm conducts leading research on biomarkers for Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative diseases, such as Lewy body dementia and Parkinson's disease. The research, internationally recognised through the BioFINDER studies, has for several years been at the forefront of fluid biomarkers and brain imaging, enabling early and accurate detection, diagnosis and prognosis of disease.

The group is led by Senior Lecturer Sebastian Palmqvist and Senior Lecturer Niklas Mattsson-Carlgren and consists of research staff and technical/administrative staff. The workplace is located at the Biomedical Centre (BMC) in Lund.

We work closely with the Memory Clinic at Sk ne University Hospital in Malm , where several of our researchers also work clinically. Read more about our research here

We are an international research group that values a good working environment characterised by respect and consideration. We strive for a workplace that is developing and stimulating for all employees, and we work continuously to create conditions that promote well-being, development and participation. Project

Description

The position is primarily associated with a five-year multicentre project (2026-2031) funded by the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) through a U01 grant for the clinical validation of the blood biomarker MTBR-tau243 in Alzheimer's disease, conducted in collaboration with Washington University in St. Louis, the University of Pennsylvania, and the University of Alabama at Birmingham. However, the work will encompass the activities of the entire research group and involve longitudinal data from several thousand participants in the BioFINDER studies, including blood and cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers, PET and MRI imaging, cognitive assessments, genetics, and proteomics.

Work duties and areas of responsibility

As biostatistician you work closely with the group's researchers and serve as a resource for statistical analysis. The primary task is to plan and carry out statistical analyses for scientific papers and to compile data across projects. The duties include:

  • planning and carrying out statistical analyses for scientific publications together with the group's researchers, for example regarding diagnostic accuracy (ROC analysis, cutoffs, calibration, prediction models) and longitudinal data (mixed models, time-to-event, etc.)
  • compiling and quality-controlling analysis datasets from the group's databases across projects
  • producing clear, publication-quality figures and tables from the data
  • writing reproducible, well-documented analysis code in R
  • contributing to the U01 project's statistical analysis plan and pre-specified analyses, together with the Principal Investigator and statisticians at the US partner sites
  • drafting methods and results sections and reviewing the statistical parts of manuscripts
  • providing statistical advice on study design, power calculations and choice of methods
  • following methodological developments in the field and introducing new tools and ways of working in the group.

Qualifications

Requirements for the position:
  • a PhD in statistics, biostatistics, epidemiology or another relevant field with a clear statistical focus. The PhD must have been awarded by the time the employment decision is made.
  • excellent command of R, including data handling and programming of reproducible analyses.
  • a strong ability to visualise data and produce clear, publication-quality figures.
  • good knowledge of statistical modelling, in particular regression models, methods for diagnostic accuracy and analysis of longitudinal data.
  • excellent command of English, spoken and written (English is the group's working language).

Great importance will be attached to personal qualities. We are looking for someone who is meticulous and structured, able to explain statistical methods and results to clinicians and researchers, service-minded and able to handle several parallel projects and deadlines.

Additional merits for the position:
  • previous experience of statistical analysis of clinical or medical data, in particular in biomarker, cohort or dementia research. This is a strong merit.
  • knowledge of our research field: Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (AD/ADRD).
  • co-authorship of scientific publications and experience of writing methods and results sections or other supporting text in manuscripts.
  • experience of writing statistical analysis plans and carrying out pre-specified analyses, for example in clinical trials or diagnostic validation studies.
  • experience of using LLM-based AI tools in statistical work (coding, documentation, drafting) and/or experience of machine learning on clinical data.
  • experience of data management in databases (e.g. REDCap, SQL) and harmonisation of variables across cohorts.
  • knowledge of Python or other programming languages.

Other information

This is a permanent position, 100 %, starting as soon as possible or according to agreement. A six months probationary period may be applied. Employment at Lund University is based in Sweden and you are therefore expected to carry out your work on site in Lund. Knowledge of Swedish is not a requirement for the position.
